Durham is a historic city and the county town of County Durham in North East England. The city lies on the River Wear. Founded over the final resting place of St Cuthbert, its Norman cathedral became a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England. The cathedral and adjacent 11th-century castle were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832. HM Prison Durham is also located close to the city centre.

If you’ve never been to Northumberland before you are in for a real treat.
A hidden gem, Northumberland boasts vast unspoilt beaches, imposing castles, cobbled market towns and stunning wildlife
Seahouses, Bamburgh and Holy Island – an excursion visiting the charming coastal villages of Seahouses and Bamburgh, plus a trip across the tidal causeway to the delightful unspoilt Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Visit the lovely market town of Alnwick with its cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and fine stone buildings.

Whitley Bay For most of the 19th century Whitley Bay was a mining and fishing settlement on a rugged stretch of the North Sea Coast.
But things changed quickly as the town was reborn as a holiday resort, with tourists arriving from nearby Newcastle on the newly built railway.
On Whitley Bay’s majestic coastline is a two-mile Blue Flag beach bordered by the quaint old fishing harbour at Cullercoats and St Mary’s Lighthouse, which is now a visitor attraction.
The beach is traced by the Links, a vast tract of greenery, and there’s a taste of Edwardian seaside glamour at the Spanish City (1910), a magnificent entertainment venue that has been relaunched as a dining destination.
